The IUC-UMI Program, funded by the VLIR-UOS, responds to a predisposition of the Moulay Ismaïl University to play the role of driving force in the development of the Fez-Meknes region in areas which constitute both the vocation of this region and strategic and thematic priorities identified by stakeholders in Morocco and Flanders (Belgium).

This was the spirit when we launched our IUC ten years ago. The first dream was to fulfill our academic goals and we did, but more importantly, we are proud of our impact on the region and the civil society: the UMI has become an essential node for innovation and socio-economic development in the region Fes-Meknes, especially in the domains of environmental health, water, and food quality and traditional plants.
UMI is now considered a model in Morocco for synergies between North and South, e.g. Europe and Africa. Beyond these achievements, the relationships within the projects between the Flemish and the Moroccan partners evolved from academic collaboration to intercultural relations and real friendship. Even Dutch and Arabic are no anymore completely foreign languages to each other.
